Stay Undefined Exclusive: Owner’s Review of Mahindra Renault Logan 1.5D

Hi All, This is the first of the User’s review series that I have just begun. This is an exclusive review of Mahindra Renault Logan by Maximus for my blog. Maximus is an Auto-enthusiast, a Moderator at the Overdrive Forum and of course is one of the owners Mahindra Renault Logan, which sadly has been launched only in 11 cities.

So what’s the Logan like? Does the lack in aggressive styling really matter? Is it a Value for money car? Get all your questions regarding the car that beats even the C class in dimensions.
Here’s the review.

Negative first impressions of driving a supposedly low cost sedan were nullified at the outset itself because the car, though possessing rather sparse lines to accentuate the styling, did have a certain cozy feel to it, which is ever so important when buying or owning a car. So, what’s it like to own India’s first wide body car? As a driver, not too entertaining considering the lack of brute power or console knick knacks, but as a passenger, words fall short. Renault, and more importantly Mahindra, has got it just right.

Make no mistake, it is a low cost car and the outcome is clearly visible in the single parking lamp, the lack of styling ( even that aids to give it a nice muscular stance, coupled with the classy looking centrally mounted Renault badge on the grill up front ), and sparse interiors. But then, this is not what it was made for. The specifications pit this as bigger than the Merc C class and competition, and it does that with aplomb, sink into the backseat and one does not feel like one is in a low cost sedan by any stretch of the imagination. They have made up for the lack of power, styling and goodies with some awesome room once inside the vehicle, which is a smart move considering a lot of sedan buyers usually employ drivers to chauffeur them around whilst the lounge on the back seat with their laptops and cell phones, being least bothered about what lies under the hood of the car or in the dash up front.

Coming to the car itself, they have maintained an aggressive stance and some work has surely gone into the Dacia for India. There are lines running all the way across the C pillar that seek to establish a not totally devoid sense of style, whilst the grill, the 185 tyres, the McPherson strut suspension ( not independent link sadly ) and its 155mm ground clearance all add to the value for money this car offers. The model we own is a 1.5D, and at 65bhp at 4000 rpm, its not exactly sprightly, but is more than adequate for the city as we found out, it is actually quicker to the 40+ kmph mark than the 1.6 petrol, one can put that down to the higher torque offered by the Diesel variant (16.4kgm @ 2krpm as opposed to a miserly 13 kgm @3100rpm for the petrol). Once past the 40kmph mark however, the car will chug along steadily but slowly towards its claimed 145kmph top whack (although one must keep in mind that this was not made for that purpose, if someone is looking for a performance diesel, the Fiesta and Verna offer a bit more, with some in house dash sensibilities too at a much higher price!). The mileage gained so far from this vehicle is an unbelievable 19kmpl (mix of both city and highway driving, at usual cruising speeds, with minimal use of overdrive). That coupled with its hard to believe leg and head room, make for a decent combination of owning the machine.

Driving the Logan: the 1.5D, like all diesel engines, emits a nice throaty purr from the engine on firing up, but the NVH control is reasonably good and one can barely hear the mill toiling away under the hood once seated with the windows up. At first glance, the frugal interiors might not please the eye, but they are adequate, especially the glove compartments, the glovebox which is rather useful. The aircon is decent, powerful if needed, cooling at lower degrees, and it surprisingly does not strain the torquey diesel engine pull either (unlike the petrol variant). The steering wheel is big, with a cute centrally mounted Renault badge concealing the tacho and speedo up front, nestled between which is a digital display, offering some other useful indicators to the driver. There are cup holders below the well finished gear lever, behind which comes: the easy to locate and easy to use hand brake. The plasticky feel might take a bit of getting used to, but I doubt it would pose any major problems taking into consideration the overall experience of driving this car. Even for its rather sedate looks, it does manage to turn a few heads considering it’s new in the market. There is an antiroll bar and the car has got its suspension strengthened for the Indian market and this is clearly visible in the way it tackles a pothole, even if taken into one rather harshly, though not independent link, the suspension is more than capable of taking a few bumps in its stride and the ground clearance means you can stuff the back without having to worry about scraping the undercarriage on the many potholes or speed breakers that abound our roads. Immediate comparisons with the erstwhile Ford Ikon do arise (it is my pick of the Indian cars for various reasons and we own one of those too) because of the similarity in looks if viewed from certain angles, the more sub continent centric build quality and the low cost nature of manufacture.

Mahindra Renault Logan Owner's Review

None of the models at the time of purchase came with ABS sadly, but the discs up front are more than adequate to get this to stop, as a matter of fact it has a bit too much bite (which I put down to the pads being rather new and the tyres blistering cold at the time of testing) The gearbox is not as slick as its contemporaries the Fiesta, Verna or the City, but is smooth and assured in its own right and 2 fingers is all it requires to shift up or down. There is no point stressing the engine to higher rpms because it will result in a hunt for power that is non existent, keep it between 1500 to 3000 and there is enough torque to allow a sail through traffic or a decent highway cruise at 80kmph. This machine is all about value for money, and there are very few machines out there apart from the Skoda Octavia Tdi that rate as high on the VFM list. Whilst the young exec might be hard pressed to enjoy its worth and lack of power and features, the middle aged or chauffeur driven buyer would be the most satisfied of the lot (add a few entry level hatch buyers too!)

Mahindra Renault Logan Owner's Review

I had my eyes set on a beautiful used Hyundai Sonata Gold, and the new Palio 1.6 sport, but the Logan seemed the more logical option as a family car, especially with a driver around, and I’m glad I listened to the folks. I might not have been happy driving it, but boy, sit back, let someone else take the pain of carving through sickening city jams, and enjoy the plush, almost never ending rear seat! At Rs. 6.7lakhs ex showroom, its got a lot going for it, and judging by the number of Logans adding to the road day by day, one wonders if Ford, Hyundai and Honda are planning a cost cut yet. Oh and did I mention its got a huge boot to boot! (pun very much intended)

  1. I awaited the review of the Logan for some time now mate!

    Cheers! Nice work.

  2. Good review – a comparison with Indigo would have been very helpful.

  3. Hey maltesh, hows u buddy?

nicely done blog!!! Looks quite snazzy ( esp the watermarking ;-) )

@ Ketan Pandit – as a matter of fact, I DID test the Indigo Dicor as well, but buddy Maltesh wanted an owners review not a comparo so I stuck to the Logan! Maybe next time… but off hand… lets just say that the Indigo falls short…many reasons why… but then thats another review altogether!!

  4. Hi Max,
I am fine, was Out station, just back home. :)

Yea, I actually wanted to do a comparo of the two vehicles, but in Goa there aren’t any Logan dealers :( SO that’s why I haven’t.

Had seen the comparo on many mags, news etc. The Logan does have an edge over the Indigo.

  5. Good practical review.

I have test driven Logan. The diesel engine is cool and the car is pretty decent in terms of interiors and strong built.

Before placing an order, would like to know from you about the service and availability of spares.

    What has been your experience?
    Srivatsava

  6. Hi,
what’s the colour shown in the photograph? Is it Beige?
How is Black on the logan?
I am planning to buy a petrol car (SEDAN) for 5-6 L. Is the Logan a better option or AVEO?
    Thanks for all the help

  7. @ G Srivatsava,

There should be good availability of spares and service, and I believe that Mahindra service outlets might be doing the servicing of the Logan.

  8. @ Bal,

I am a fan of the black colour, and The Logan too shall look good with the black. Its just a personal choice and very subjective opinoin.

For the choice between Aveo and the Logan, I guess Max has spoken a bit on this, but in regard to the Fiesta. For more performance, better interiors, looks if the matter go for the Aveo. For frugal performance, mileage, decent looks and a car for city driving go for the Logan. Hope I have answered your queries.

  9. Thanks a lot.
What is the colour shown in your photo?
I am proceeding with Black GLE 1.4 Petrol, inspite of concerns such as
    1. whether the JV for 50,000 vehicles will survive. if not spares, service :(
    2. Will this car have a fate of Peugot in India? to be withdrawn after some time in spite of being a good vehicle? (But given good marketing, it should sell well)
    3. Will the TVS dealer give proper service support? Hope Mahindra or atleast Renault will provide some training and inputs.
The reasons for going in are:
    1. Am a fan of GHOSN, CEO, Renault- for a long time, following how he turned around ailing NISSAN
    2. I drive in city and am quite close to office. Petrol will suffice. Indigo and Ikon are oput as they are quite dated models. Aveo, Verna and Fiesta diesels are fine but petrols are expensive compared to Logan. I want a sedan so getz, swift et all are out too. Was driving an Accent Petrol GLE since 2000 and sold recently as it started giving trouble. Else Accent was perfect for me. Cant wait for long till Fabia or others are launched.
    Any thing more to add?

  10. Hot News.
Drove over to the LOGAN dealer at Trivandrum on my Ford Fiesta Diesel this afternoon. In Trivandrum, they have just launched two days back and reportedly have about 10-12 bookings already. I was confused with all the contradicting reports on the net. I was really not bothered about looks, as today even a merc or an audi doesnt really turn heads on the street- in India! I took a test drive. It was DLX 1.5. That changed it all. I had absolutely no doubts after that. just asked for a booking form and paid a cheque of 50K. ( I booked for a petrol DLE 1.4 though- as I already have a Diesel car). And yes, black it was.
    That explains.
    bal

  11. I guess you have answered your queries Bal, Congratulations on the purchase, Drive safe with your seat bets on.

As for the spares. The car is a very basic design so you will find non genuine parts in the market soon. There’s also a JV between M&M and Nissan for car parts etc. So that should fuel the needs. i don’t think that the spare part worry should matter that much.

Although in this fast moving markets, the life cycle of products gets reduced, but for the Logan, as I said before its strond point is the very basic design that in incorporates (like the Splendor in bikes) so I guess non-genuine parts should fill the market soon in 2/3 years.

  12. And from where does a TVS dealer pop in here?

  13. TVS group (T V Sundaram Iyer & Sons) are a long time auto service providers based in Tamil Nadu and Kerala and predominantly handling Heavy vehicles such as Leyland Trucks, M&M Jeeps and Trucks etc. In the car segment, they started out with FIAT. and the story goes that the after sales support provided by TVS did a lot to the diminishing sales of SIENNA, PETRA and PALIO! Finally, now FIAT has entrusted the service to TATA dealers. People say that TVS people have been used to handling truck drivers and taxi drivers and so couldnt do justice to the new sophisticated clientle. But with Scorpio, Mahindra seems to have impressed upon TVS to mend its way and bring about some improvements. I am sure Renault will addreess this and so far my experience has been good. To cite a personal example, I tried the Toll Free no. of Mahindra and someone did pick up without much wait and answered plesantly. In fact I got an SMS a few seconds later and a few minutes later, the concerned sales rep from TVS at cochin office called and provided the info. Then there was a follow up call from Mahindra as well as dealer after a couple of days. This was heartening becuase, it was NOT just the sales guy of the dealer pestering, but someone from the company-MAHINDRA was following up and checking. That was reassuring.
The reason I write in such detail is because I hope that some day, some responsible guy in either TVS or Mahindra will read this and use this feedback to improve their systems.

  14. to make things clearer, TVS is the authorised dealer of LEYLAND trucks, Mahindra vehicles and now Renault in southern states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala. (Dont get confused with the group compant that makes TVS bikes)

  15. Thanks for the Information Bal,

Its good to know that Mahindra is working towards better Customer Relations.

  16. A Nice and Practical Review. This makes me more eager to have my logan faaast..
    cheers
    vyenky

  17. Hey maltesh,
I test drove Logan 1.5 DLS today. There were a lot of positives and a few negatives.

Let me ask you a few points about the negatives first.
    1. I found the Clutch to be very very hard and there seems to be some kind of a friction which i could feel when pressing the clutch. Do you think its specific to the car I test drove or do you also find in your car too?

    2. At low speeds say 10KM when in a a traffic and driving in the second gear I get a few jerks . Its much smoother in my Maruti Wagon R . Dont know is it because very less power or due to some thing else.

Interiors are OK looking at the price beeing low and the greatest thing about this one is its price.

    Beast regards
    Ansuman

  18. Very nice review. I’ve taken a test drive today. My nagative inputs are here, AC and interiors are not satisfactory level. Hope, I need to test drive a different vehicle and come to the conclusion. I liked the pickup, its superb! We should not get compare Logan with Verna, Honda City etc., there styles are entirely different. Finally, Logan is the best car available in C Segment @ 6.25 Lakhs. Appreciate, if anyone can give the feedback on AC. Thanks!

  19. I have test driven logan, dunno why people are comparing it to Fiesta & Verna , they must be fools or real dumb to do that, both verna and fiesta diesel and petrol models are way to expensive than the logan, so u cant compare, comparing power and performance does not make sense as u cant compare a 6.5 lk car to 8 lkh plus on road car, doesnt make sense. if u want to compare, compare it with esteem for petrol of indigo, ikon, accent, as these are the cars that one will get in the same price range, in fact suzuki swift diesel cost nearly around 5.5 lakhs, as a buyer i need to decide if i am buying a diesel version and i ahve a budget of 6.5 lakhs, which is better indigo or logan

  20. hey

To me.i find indigo as more value for money carthan logan inall ways(styling ,power, ground clearance, inside space, boot)

  21. I bought my 1.6GLX (petrol) LOGAN 2 weeks back and I am more than happy with the performance. I gives ample power at low RPMs. Even on the 5th gear you can drive it at speeds as low as 25km/h and you still get a decent response if you press the pedal. That is really convenient since you don’t need to change gears too often in high traffic situations. The vehicle is still in the running in period and i have not taken it beyond 100km/h.

  22. Hi,
I am proud to own the FIRST PETROL Logan in Trivandrum! :) It has been two weeks since I have the Logan with me and the vehicle is the centre of attraction wherever it goes. I took it to GURUVAYOOR Temple last week and I could notice people riding Skodas and Mercs, tailing the car and putting heads out to have a look at Logan. It sure has created a lot of interest in the society. Now it is for Mahindra to provide good after sales support to capitalise on the momentum

  23. I test drove Logal DLX and here are my feelings -

    Positives
    + Very spacious
+ Very good interiors (though dashboard could be bit better).
    + Neat finish inside-out
+ Power seem to be good
    + Good suspension
+ Very good cabin and trunk/boot space
+ Very good front/side and back visibility
+back seats are more inclined and spacious without too much of protrusion in the center

    Negatives
    - Clutch seem to be quite hard, leg really aches
    - Horn was quite hard
    - At low/idle speeds, there is some noise (Swift diesel seem to be quieter)
    - Power Window controlls are scattered (to reduce number of switches required!)
    - No internal trunk release lever.

I am not sure how many of these -ves are specific to the vehicle I drove.

  24. [...] de lucht’. Nu zijn er ook de eerste gebruikersfoto’s van deze Logan, afkomstig van de weblog van Maltesh Ashrit. Opvallende verschillen ten opzichte van ‘onze’ Dacia [...]

  25. I got a DLE but i feel the cluth is very hard. Service engg. also can’t able to rectify it.

  26. hi guys, good news for Logan owners & those who are planning to buy 1…i recently came across a press release which measured cars on their problems per 100 vehicles & believe it or not Logan is rated the best in the Entry Midsize segment with the least number of problems i.e “65″ which is way better than any vehicle in the Midsize category…

  27. this car is just too good to resist i got one with me and i feel proud when i drive it its an indian zedan

  28. A very nice review. What is the Odo reading and How is the performance now?

  29. Please do check the new Maruti Swift DZire. It beats the logan hands down. Good looks, good price, good features, good mileage and reliable service support.

  30. hi frnds , i jst wanna ask u people dat u all r also facing a problem in logan regarding door rackling , ma car doors r making a lot of noise.

  31. I have purchased a Logan(diesel) and it is giving very good performance. It can be compared with the costly cars like Fiesta& Verna. Excellent mileage, very smooth. Very spacious. A/c also excellent. Only negative I noticed is the ground clearance of 170 mm is not felt. A/C blower could be made little more silent(higher blow rate). Stating time torque seems to be little less.
The dealer in Kerala (TVS) improved a lot. The after sales services are good. They patiently explains the fault & details. Can be believed for the work carried out.

I think the product require more marketing!!!

  32. I had plans to buy logan 1.4 GLX but now i am in dilemma whether to go for new ikon or Logan. how about maintance and after sale support in chennai for logan. can anyone help me out with these info?
