It’s confirmed; in an Autocar India report Skoda has confirmed the launch of Fabia, premium hatchback car. The Fabia was expected in India quite some time ago, but then Skoda were working on the pricing of the car, until I guess they decided to slate it as a premium segment hatch, a notch above Swift. The car to be priced at around 5-6 lacs, shall be powered by 1.2L petrol and a 1.4L diesel. Expect some parts to be shared between the Fabia and other Skoda cars probably Octavia. The production shall begin somewhere in Oct 2007. Read excerpt,
According to Skoda chairman Detlef Wittig, production of the Fabia will commence at the Aurangabad plant from October 2007. Skoda also clarified that it plans to continue making the current Octavia in India, even though it has been replaced by the Laura (called the New Octavia) in many global markets.
The Fabia right now does not have the competition in India (Getz would be a league lesser), but the soon to be launched Honda Jazz, is most likely to be pitted in the same league. The Fabia is expected to provide the same handling and ride quality as on an Octavia. So Skoda not compromising on that has offered it as a premium hatch. The only car that around the mark is the Getz from Hyundai, but then I reckon the Fabia to be a lot better.
Pictures posted are from this year’s Geneva Motor Show, where the car was globally launched.

New Skoda Fabia has got seven engine options, however, India will get maximum three i.e. 1.2L Petrol, 1.4L Petrol and 1.4L Diesel. 1.2L (1198cc), 3-cylinder, 12V Petrol engine produces 70ps of power and 123Nm of torque. 1.4L (1422cc), 3-cylinder, 12V TDI Diesel engine produces 80ps of power and 195Nm of torque. They are powerful enough to give you wonderful drive. Diesel engine is 3-cylinder version of Laura’s engine and is a little noisy like its bigger sibling. Last but not least, both Petrol and Diesel engines are quite fuel efficient.

It looks so much like SWIFT, who copied whom? Front, sides, back, dashboard, arm rests on doors ….
Why 3 cylinder engine? Does TDI uses common rail fuel injection? Will they have more service network to take it to mass market.
I was waiting for good diesel car in 6-7 lakhs. Was more inclined towards SWIFT diesel because of its right pricing, very good build, responsive and latest diesel technology but finally dropped because of its cramped back seats and almost no luggage space. Finally going with Logan though its interiors are mediocre but gains in space, fuel economy and reasonable price for a sedan with near latest engine technology.

I am surprised why still people are making guesses about the engine specs. In one of the posts above on Dec 29th somebody mentioned there is a 1.9 TDI PD/77 kW diesel engine but I don’t think they have that offering in India based on the brochure already published and made available on the http://www.fabiafeelspecial.com website for India.

Safety features in India came almost as afterthoughts. Heavy taxation coupled with limited purchasing power was the restraining factor. Actually we have one of the heighest ratio of accidents. Even today there are no regualtions. Fabia has done its bit in improving safety norms. Commendable.

Ridiculous price tag for a small car. Looks boxy. May be little more spacious than swift. Interiors are disappointing. Not huge improvement from Swift. Low ground clearance. Combined with poor service network & costly spares of Skoda, Fabia will be a huge flop.
